The Match: What Happened
The match is best known for a real-life injury that cut the action short.
- The Finish: During the match, Randy Orton tried to perform his finisher, the RKO. Triple H countered by throwing Orton over the top rope to the floor. Orton landed awkwardly on his shoulder, legitimately breaking his left collarbone .
- The Result: Orton was severely injured and could not continue. Triple H grabbed his signature sledgehammer, struck Orton, and Orton failed to answer the referee’s 10-count. Triple H retained the WWE Championship .
- Aftermath: The injury was real. WWE.com reported that Orton would be unable to compete for at least two months following the PPV . The following night on Raw, Triple H declared “The Age of Orton” officially broken .
